Health and Self-Care for Insurance Agents: Are You Taking Your Own Advice?

Insurance agents are great at giving advice.

We tell clients to protect their income, protect their families, plan ahead, review their coverage, and avoid waiting until there is a problem.

But here is the uncomfortable question:

Are we taking our own advice?

Insurance agents spend their days helping other people protect what matters most. But it’s easy to become so focused on clients, sales, renewals, paperwork, and growing the agency that your own health and well-being get pushed to the bottom of the list.

And that is a problem.

Because building a successful insurance business means very little if the person running it is exhausted, stressed, unhealthy, and running on fumes.

Let Me Tell on Myself for a Minute

My dentist once told me:

“You should floss.”

Now, I know she is right.

She is the professional. I went to her because I trust her advice.

But I hate flossing.

I mean, I really hate it.

My first reaction was basically:

“Come on. You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.”

But then I had to laugh at myself.

If I expect my clients to listen to good advice, shouldn’t I be willing to listen to good advice too?

So I made it simple.

I got a little tool, set a daily reminder, and now every day at the same time, my phone or computer gives me a little alert:

Floss.

Am I perfect?

No.

Do I do it every single day?

No.

But am I doing it more often?

Absolutely.

And at my next dentist appointment, she said:

“Wow, this is incredible. What are you doing?”

That is the power of small habits.

And insurance agents need to hear this.

Self-Care for Insurance Agents Doesn’t Have to Be Complicated

Your health and self-care don’t improve because you wait for the perfect season.

They improve because you start small, build routines, and stay consistent.

Too many insurance agents treat their own health like something they will deal with later.

After the next busy season.

After the next sales goal.

After the next renewal cycle.

After the next big client.

After things finally slow down.

But here’s the truth:

Things may never slow down on their own.

There is always another call to return.

Another quote to finish.

Another client issue.

Another renewal.

Another carrier problem.

Another email.

Another fire to put out.

If you’re not careful, the insurance business can consume you.

And you can end up building a successful book of business while neglecting the person who has to carry it.

Insurance Agent Burnout Is a Real Business Problem

When you’re constantly working, your health isn’t the only thing affected.

Your energy suffers.

Your focus suffers.

Your relationships suffer.

Your decision-making suffers.

And eventually, your business can suffer too.

That is why work-life balance for insurance agents isn’t about working less just for the sake of working less.

It’s about creating a sustainable way to work, grow, and succeed without sacrificing your health and personal life in the process.

You don’t need to choose between having a successful insurance agency and having a healthy life.

The goal is to build a business that supports the life you want—not a business that takes over your life.

Self-Care Is Not Selfish

Self-care is not selfish.

It is stewardship.

Think about the things you routinely tell your clients to do.

Protect yourself.

Plan ahead.

Prepare for the unexpected.

Don’t wait until there is a crisis.

Those principles apply to your health, too.

So ask yourself:

  • What are you eating?
  • How are you sleeping?
  • Are you moving your body?
  • Are you getting enough time away from work?
  • Are you laughing enough?
  • Are you spending meaningful time with people you care about?
  • Are you taking time to breathe, pray, reflect, or simply be still?
  • Are you spending your days staring at screens without giving your mind a chance to reset?

You don’t need a complicated wellness program.

Sometimes stress management for insurance agents can be surprisingly simple.

It might be homemade food.

A short walk.

A few minutes on a bike.

Stretching between appointments.

A real conversation with a friend.

Weeding the garden.

Cooking dinner.

Laughing until your stress finally breaks.

Going to bed earlier.

Taking a few quiet minutes in the morning.

Or setting one reminder that helps you finally do the thing you’ve been avoiding.

Small Habits Can Create Big Changes

You do not have to overhaul your entire life by Monday.

In fact, trying to change everything at once may be exactly what keeps you from changing anything.

Instead, start with one bite.

One habit.

One reminder.

One better meal.

One workout appointment.

One accountability partner.

One quiet morning routine.

One moment of laughter.

One small decision to put your phone away.

One commitment to leave the office on time.

Small habits become routines.

Routines become consistency.

And consistency creates results.

That’s true in your health.

It’s true in your business.

And it’s true in your personal life.

Protect the Person Behind the Business

As an insurance agent, you spend your career protecting other people.

You help clients protect their families.

You help business owners protect their companies.

You help people prepare for uncertainty.

But who is protecting you?

Ultimately, you have to take responsibility for protecting your own health, energy, relationships, and time.

Because your clients need you sharp.

Your team needs you steady.

Your family needs you present.

And your future self needs you to start taking better care of yourself now.

The agents who last aren’t necessarily the ones who sell the most.

They are the ones who learn how to sustain themselves while they succeed.

Because success means very little if you’re exhausted, unhealthy, disconnected, and running on fumes.

What Is Your “Floss” Habit?

Here’s the question I want you to think about today:

What is your “floss” habit?

What is one small thing you already know you should be doing that would make your life better if you finally made it part of your routine?

Maybe it’s exercising.

Maybe it’s getting more sleep.

Maybe it’s eating better.

Maybe it’s taking a walk every afternoon.

Maybe it’s spending 20 minutes without your phone.

Maybe it’s making time for your spouse.

Maybe it’s reconnecting with a friend.

Maybe it’s simply creating a few quiet minutes in your day.

Don’t try to fix everything.

Start there.

Pick one small habit.

Put it on your calendar.

Set a reminder.

Make it easy.

And repeat it.

Because just like flossing, small things done consistently can make a much bigger difference than we realize.

Take Care of Yourself—So You Can Take Care of What Matters Most

Your insurance agency needs your leadership.

Your clients need your expertise.

Your team needs your example.

Your family needs your presence.

And you deserve to enjoy the life you’re working so hard to build.

Don’t wait for a crisis to start taking care of yourself.

Start small.

Start today.

And remember:

You can’t build a great business by sacrificing the person who built it.
